Product Description

The Hoshizaki KM-522MAK is a 22-inch air-cooled modular Crescent Cuber head rated at 548 pounds of ice per 24 hours, running on R290 natural refrigerant. It sits in the middle of Hoshizaki's MAK slim-line range, above the 322 and below the 622, and is the size most restaurants and bars land on.

R290 and the refrigerant question

The MAK generation replaced R-404A with R290, a hydrocarbon refrigerant carried here in a 5.3 ounce sealed charge. Two things follow. R290 has a global warming potential of about three, so the machine is outside the HFC phase-down and will not face a mid-life refrigerant problem. And it moves heat efficiently — the unit is ENERGY STAR qualified at 5.15 kWh per 100 pounds of ice at 90/70 conditions while drawing 10.8 amps on an ordinary 115V circuit.

Cleaning that actually gets done

Ice machine failures are usually maintenance failures. Hoshizaki's CleanAssist brings the full cleaning cycle down to roughly an hour, which makes it a task a closing shift can complete rather than one that slips a month at a time. The EverCheck alert system flags conditions before they become a service call.

Slim footprint and bin pairing

At 22 inches wide and 28 inches tall the head fits equipment runs that will not take a 30-inch machine. It pairs with Hoshizaki's B-300SF and B-500SF storage bins and the DB-130H dispenser. Ice is the crescent cube — flat on one face, curved on the other — which packs a glass without bridging and melts slowly in a drink.
